Some facts about sealing stone and tiles

Most ceramic and polished porcelain tiles will not need to be sealed due to their density. However the grout can defiantly attract staining so sealing the grout lines can be very beneficial.

Porous synthetic or natural stones tiles will need to be sealed to prevent permanent staining.
From the time they are laid, tiles can be exposed to efflorescence, salt attack, picture framing, spalling, spills, weather, animals, children and tradesmen, so it is best to seal them sooner rather than later.

Sealing your tiles will not stop them from getting dirty but will work by making what was once a porous surface that would attract and draw in oils, waters, moulds etc, to now a treated surface that will repeal these penetrates.
In return your job of hosing, moping or sweeping will now be a lot more effective and easier.

All natural stones are acid sensitive. For example: Red wines, fruit juices, vinegars, cokes and most cleaning products can etch into your stone giving a patchy, dull or Smoky look. This can only be corrected by regrinding or polishing.
The rights sealers will protect from acids etching.

Impregnating sealers - Impregnating sealers sink into the tile and protect the stone from within by
depositing solid materials into the tile pores to coat the material beneath it. The active ingredient of an
impregnating sealer is either a natural or synthetically made resin.
After the sealer is applied, the water or solvent evaporates and leaves the resin in the stone, hardening to
form a protectant that prevents the stone from absorbing other materials.

Advantages Let the tile breath.
Can recoat on top without having to strip old sealer.
Will not change the appearance of your stone,
Won’t wear or scratch,
Lasts years longer,
Quick drying,

Topical sealers
– Topical sealers sit on the top of the stone and provide a coating that protects the tile
from damage. The purpose of the sealer is to reduce the natural absorbency of the stone so foreign
materials such as dirt and liquids will not sink into the stone and will instead remain on the surface until
they can be wiped away.
Advantages They can provide a shiny, glossy wet look to the stone. Excellent for slate.
Will protect stone from wear.
Very easy to clean.
Excellent against acid attack.
